Okkyung Pak was born in Korea. After finishing high school in Korea, she migrated to Brazil (Sao Paolo)

with her family in 1964, and lived there for 4 years where she learned Portuguese. She worked in an agricultural cooperative and taught English, while auditing English literature at night at University of Sao Paolo.

In 1968, she followed her parents and migrated for the second time to Canada where she has 2 children

and is living in Montreal, Canada with her husband.

박옥경 교수는 현재(2018) 몬트리얼대학 동아시아 연구소의 객원 연구원이다. 퀘벡시에있는 라발대학에서 사회인류학 박사학위를 취득했다 (1968). 논문은 인도네시아 수마트라섬에있는 모계 사회의 특이한 여성들의 사회적 위치를 다루었다. 논문외에 여러개의 글을 아카데믹 저널에 발표했다. 캐나다 연방정부에서 20년동안 사회 개발 문제 (특히 여성의 사회적 위치) 고문으로 일을 했으며, 2010년 은퇴후에 제주도 해녀에대한 연구를 시작해, 제주대학에서 여름학기 강의를 하며 스위스에 있는 재단에서 연구비를 얻어 현지답사를 했다 (2016). 그결과로 2018년 10월에 이연구 재단에서 (Fondation Barbiere-Mueller) 책이 출판됐다. 책제목은 <이중 신화, 신유고사상과 제주의 해녀> (Dual Mythology, Neo-Confucianism and Women Divers of Jeju, Korea). 이 책은 제주의 해녀 사회와 수마트라섬의 모계사회에서 비슷한 여성의 사회적 위치를 보여준다.
